Bulk Shipping

Bulk shipping is the transportation of large quantities of goods that are generally similar and transported unpackaged in large quantities. This method is primarily used for items such as oil, grains, coal, or minerals that are loaded directly into the vessel’s cargo holds or tanks. Bulk shipping is distinguished from other types of shipping because the goods are not individually packaged, boxed, or handled as separate pieces.

Types of Bulk Shipping

Bulk shipping can be categorised into two main types: dry bulk shipping and liquid bulk shipping.

Dry Bulk Shipping

Dry bulk shipping refers to the transport of commodities that are solid and granular such as sand, coal, grains, and iron ore. These goods are loaded directly into the holds of bulk carriers, which are specially designed ships equipped to handle these materials. The unloading process often involves conveyors, grabs, or shovels.

Liquid Bulk Shipping

Liquid bulk shipping is used for transporting large quantities of liquids. Commonly transported liquids include crude oil, chemicals, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Tankers, which are ships designed with large tank compartments, carry these liquids. Safety and environmental protection are important in liquid bulk shipping due to the hazardous nature of many of the liquids transported.
